That title is really a trick – you see, there aren’t really any Angkor Wat hotels.
Angkor Wat is located within Angkor Archaeological Park, and is a temple from the 12th century CE and surrounded by other buildings that range from the 9th to 12th century CE. So you can now understand why there isn’t really such a thing as Angkor Wat hotels.
What you can find is something that is as short a distance as possible from Angkor Wat to hotels. And in most cases, this mean the city of Siem Reap. In fact, if you click on an ad you see that states “Angkor Wat Hotels” you’ll see that the hotel is actually located in Siem Reap.
A beautiful city within itself, Siem Reap is located only 5 km away from Angkor Wat, making hotels there your best bet when you want to explore the site. Now if there were Angkor Wat hotels, that would be an amazing place to stay – being able to be that close to such a significant part of history. But, if we’d like the magnificence of Angkor Wat and the other sites that are part of the Angkor Archaeological Park to stay around, we’ve got to make sure that the ancient buildings are preserved as much as possible. So that means there won’t ever be any Angkor Wat hotels.
In fact, Angkor Wat was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. UNESCO stands for the United Nation’s Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. Being declared a World Heritage Site means that the United Nations feel that there is a need to catalogue and preserve the buildings of the Angkor complex because of their outstanding importance, both cultural and natural, to the common heritage of humankind. At the same time, Angkor Wat was also placed on the list of World Site in Danger (most likely from those people who think that Angkor Wat hotels would be a good thing to see, forget the toll it would take on the complex), and UNESCO has set up many programs to ensure the safety of the Park in the years to come.
So for your Angkor Wat hotels, look to the many different accommodations that Siem Reap has to offer – everything from an inexpensive hostel-style stay to four-star accomodations, depending on your preference or budget.
